How to access ApplicationXtender outside corporate network
We have had several clients inquire about how to access documents in ApplicationXtender outside of their corporate network. Since many of our users are likely experiencing the same need, I thought it might be a good idea to share a few options.
Options to access ApplicationXtender beyond the firewall
1. The easiest and quickest way is by using a VPN. Once a user VPN’s into your corporate network, then they can access the AX server as normal.
2. Another option is to make the AX server available from outside your network through your corporate firewall.
The AX server needs to be configured to use SSL, including a certificate (such as a UCC Cert). NOTE: a wildcard certificate will work.
Obtain a public IP address that can be mapped to your AX server.
Recommended to create an A Record on your external domain to map the Public IP to a friendly name.
Have your firewall security team create the rules necessary to map the external IP to the AX server. We typically use NAT rules to do this, but your security team may use other methods.
If you want to go with the second option, the first step would be enabling SSL on your AX server and making sure this works internally first.
Once SSL is configured, the only port that needs to be opened is 443. Whoever manages your certificates should be able to install it on the AX server.
We can assist with the certificate install, re-configuring AX for SSL – if not already setup, and testing internally to make sure everything is working.
